Helping My Uncle Deal With Traumatic Brain Injury

Helping My Uncle Deal With Traumatic Brain Injury

A few years ago my uncle was in an accident where a car hit a motorcycle.  We were not sure what was going to happen next.  We knew that he had Traumatic Brain Injury.  He had hit his head, and it was very hit or miss every day for a while.  Dealing with a brain injury is not easy to do as a family.

Once we knew that we were out of the woods, and knew that he was going to pull though then we had the next step of Traumatic Brain Injury to deal with.  We had to find out how to help him though the injuries that he has suffered to be able to live his life.

One of the most difficult things about dealing with a Traumatic Brain Injury is the fact that he has to relearn everything.  Once he had learned how to breath on his own again, then we had to start teaching him everything, as you would teach a child.  It is very difficult to start over as adult.

He is now learning how to walk again.  For him walking was one of the most difficult parts of experiencing Traumatic Brain Injury.  The coordination that it takes to walk and learning balance again is not an easy task.  Taking the time and effort to concentrate on how to move his feet was very difficult.

Now he is working with the problems that are surrounding him speaking.  Learning to talk with Traumatic Brain Injury is not easy to do.  He had to learn all of the different steps again, learn how to choose the right words to speak.  He has a trouble finding the words that he wants to use to express himself.

For the family the hardest thing for us to deal with is the anger issues that he had developed.  Having a Traumatic Brain Injury is not easy to deal with, then adding the confusion and difficulty doing things that you once could do become very aggravating and makes him very angry.

As a family dealing with Traumatic Brain Injury is not easy for us.  We see him as the man he was, and are trying to help him become that again.  He is angry and confused about everything that is going on around him.  We want to comfort him and just do not know how to.  Working with him, helping him become the man he was difficult.
